Ethnic Fashion with a Heart

“JAYK” founder, Jay Kumar, discovered his love for fashion at a very young age. Learning and observing the fashion world through magazines and movies, he was inspired to try it by giving advice and helping to create his late mother’s dresses. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for designing clothes.

Simply known as JAYK within the fashion community, his first professional venture into fashion started back in 2017. Having to travel the world for design inspirations, somehow led him back to his own home country, Malaysia. JAYK realised that he had everything he needed to inspire his designs right here at home. The culture, the story, the colours, and the ethnicity. All of which represents the motifs and elements captured in the designs of his own fashion brand, simply named, “JAYK”. Now in 2022, JAYK is making waves and turning heads in the local fashion scene.

Having such distinctive and unique blend of creations, JAYK’s designs incorporate aboriginal and cultural elements that are, not only unique, but simply divine. Illustrating a harmonious blend that merges ethnicity and modern art into an element that can only be described as “JAYK” signature.

Comprising selections made for men and women, “JAYK” was first unfolded at the Borneo Fashion Week 2018. Showcasing work that infused ready-to-wear collections under the name “JAYK Homme” and “JAYK Femme” respectively. The fashion event not only introduced JAYK to the world, but also won him the prestige recognition as that year’s Upcoming Designer Award 2018 recipient.

Determined to make his mark, JAYK embarked in many fashion pursuits. One of which led him to become a part of Asian Designers Guild (ADG), which has helped “JAYK” become a fashion brand for the mass. Opening his first pop-up store in Metrojaya, Mid Valley, it is one of the many first steps that will embarked “JAYK” as an international fashion brand.

Not only that, JAYK is also involved and acknowledged in the industry as an active member of MBDA (Malaysian Bumiputera Designers Association), and MATRADE member.

…elements of originality and authenticity in ethnic designs are the true landscape of today’s fashion world…

Humanitarian Fashion

Other than fine taste in design and clothing, JAYK is also known as a humanitarian. Mixing fun fashion and social awareness, JAYK brought the public’s attention to autism. An awareness through an innovative idea of infusing and featuring the art work of autism kids into his fashion wear. A step that had gotten “JAYK” to be recognised as a fashion brand that cares.

What started as a personal interest in helping autism children, eventually became a movement in creating public awareness and an annual celebration. Started back in 2018, JAYK initiated the movement by giving opportunity to autism children a means to have a future in the world of fashion. These children’s artworks are converted into designs, and later become a feature in JAYK’s creations. This unique collaboration has created interest in parents with autism children, knowing that there are opportunities for their children in the field of fashion.

In an attempt to spread awareness and continued support for autism children. JAYK has initiated a yearly event during the Autism Month in April. During which, he will present the collection of autism inspired creations in a runway show. Aptly named “Autism Rules Fashion”, an initiative started back in 2019, this annual showcase of fun and colours have been receiving massive support, not only from parents with autism kids, but also from the general public and industry players.
